Memorial for Joshu Sasaki Roshi on August 8 and 9

Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi

Dear friends,

Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi passed away on July 27.  He will always be my Zen master, authentic, from the pre-war generation of practitioners. Fred and I have been deeply influenced by our contact with him.  Both of us are profoundly grateful for this.

My experience with zen practice and Roshi’s teaching are the foundation of meditation for me,  even as I continue practicing on the Shambhala path.

To remember Roshi,  I will practice on Friday evening and Saturday at the same time as the cremation and all night vigil will be taking place in Los Angeles (see below).  I invite you to join me, wherever you are, to sit zazen, walk kinhin and to chant the Heart Sutra.  You are also welcome to just come to drink a cup of tea or join the potluck meal at the end of the day.  Everyone is welcome, including those you know who may be interested in joining in.

Schedule in Deventer

  • Sittings will be 20 – 25 minutes with walking meditation in between.
  • On the hour the door will be opened for 5 minutes for coming and going, except for 1-6 am on Saturday morning.
  • During the break on Friday night (1:00 – 6:00 am) you are welcome to stay the night.
